“Photographer Stacy Kranitz is drawn to people outside mainstream American culture. Last summer she traveled through West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee for three months exploring the towns and the everyday lives of the people of Appalachia.”
Oh for fuck’s sake. Give it a rest with the “everyday lives of people in Appalachia” bullshit. Funny that photographers who decided to come gawk at and document the people of Appalachia somehow magically miss huge swaths of the population who do not handle snakes or burn crosses or think the creation museum is a great idea.
Related: Shelby Lee Adams can suck it, too.
Opinions?
The problem is not in that photographers come in with the wrong idea, it is that the rest of the world can’t put small pieces into a larger context. I like the photos and as an “expert” on the region, I see their beauty and importance.
Upcoming festival in Whitesburg, KY. I’ll be there!
Here is a video of last year’s Seedtime on the Cumberland festival.
